Canobie's history is a tumultuous one.  The park was originally designed in 1902 by a railroad company as a pleasure resort destination for the trolley cars that rode the tracks which had just been laid in Salem.  Visitors would stroll through the beautiful botanical gardens as well as trying their hand canoeing and spending a few hard-earned cents at the penny arcade.  Sporting events were also popular in the park or families could simply spend a relaxing day picnicking and enjoying the Circle Swing.  The park's success was short lived as the automobile became more prevalent and train and trolley usage declined.  The park was closed in 1929.

Three years later the park was purchased by a wealthy private citizen who hired a team to work for seven weeks in preparation for a grand opening in the spring.  Slowly the park started attracting visitors again.  In 1936 the park made room for the newly purchased "Greyhound Roller Coaster" - renamed "The Yankee Cannonball" and still in use today.  For the next twenty years the park slowly grew and the Canobie Lake Park Dancehall Theater attracted big name musicians such as Duke Ellington, Jimmy Dorsey Guy Lombardo and Frank Sinatra.  In 1957 the park suffered the multiple calamities of a hurricane, robbery and fire, and was forced to close its doors yet again.

The next year a small group of friends from New Jersey purchased the park and began renovations and improvements including the first pavement to be seen at Canobie.  Over time, by adding new rides, new games and more concessions, the park's reputation for family fun started gaining momentum.  Families showed up in droves and spread the word far and wide that Canobie Lake Park is "New England's Best Family Value".
