Settled in 1719 by Scotch immigrants seeking religious freedom, the Town of Windham was originally home to the Pawtucket Indians. It represented but a small part of a larger settlement, known by the residents as "Nutfield ", which also encompassed the towns of Derry and Londonderry. By the year 1741, a small fraction of the original settlers had petitioned for a charter to form a separate community whose bounds included 27.2 square miles of land and water. In 1742, Governor Benning Wentworth granted their request and the Town of Windham was incorporated. Windham is an affluent community which has maintained its rural character by encouraging high quality development. The population of Windham is approaching 12,000 people. The United States census has just released reports showing that Windham residents have the highest median household income in the state of New Hampshire at $94,794. Windham is part of Rockingham County which is the wealthiest county in New Hampshire and which has the highest median family income of any county in either New Hampshire or Massachusetts. The people of Windham have worked hard to retain the natural beauty found around this town. They have made a commitment to maintain open space and natural areas for future generations. In the early 1980's, Windham aquired Foster's Pond Natural Area. This 163 acre tract of land features walking trails that wind along a tranquil pond which is surrounded by dense woodlands. In the later 1980's, " Dear Leap " was purchased. This 54 acre site features walking trails that meander among massive rock out-croppings which eventually lead to a precipitous rock ledge overlooking Moeckel Pond. The Andrew Town Forest borders Beaver Brook in West Windham and the Verrette Conservation Area allows for canoe access to Canobie Lake. In 2003, the town aquired over 80 acres of land to near it's southeast lands quadrant for preservation as open space. The town has an ongoing system of using current use taxes to aquire new open space for the benifit of the residents in town. Windham is also in the process of preserving it's historic resources. Searles Castle , an authentic 20 room English Tudor castle set atop a 175 acre estate is located in Windham. Searles Castle was built under the direction of Edward F. Searles, an interior decorator and antique collector. It was completed in 1915 at a cost of over one million dollars. Although not generally open to the public, it is available for functions and sometimes offers special events for the public. |
