Introduction to Derry, New Hampshire

Separated from neighboring Londonderry by Interstate Route 93, Derry, New Hampshire is home to over 35,000 residents who are proud to call this Rockingham County town their home.  With a prime location, bustling businesses and quiet country neighborhoods, Derry is likely to remain one of the most sought-after towns in southern NH.  Derry homes nearly sell themselves when buyers get one look at the small town character that so permeates the community.

History of Derry

Originally settled in 1719, the area was still a part of the sprawling town of Londonderry, as was Manchester, Windham, Hudson and Salem, New Hampshire.  Eventually incorporated in 1827, Derry was primarily a linen-producing town with several mills producing a variety of cotton and wool materials.  This continued into the early 1900's when much of the New England textile industry shifted toward the southern states.  Farming had always been a staple for Derry inhabitants until after the Second World War when Midwest farming gained momentum with newly developed government subsidies.  Derry has since opened its doors to commercial business and industry while managing to maintain the high standard of resident comfort that Derry homeowners have come to expect.

Being situated so close to Route 93 gives those in Derry quick and easy access to Manchester, Boston and the New Hampshire seacoast.  Literally only ten minutes from the Manchester Airport and forty-five to Boston's Logan Airport, Derry is accesible to anywhere at any time.  The best NH downhill skiing is an hour north and boating on New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee is even closer.  Derry itself is home to many ponds and streams as well as cross country skiing, tennis, several municipal parks with swimming, basketball and soccer fields.  If you don't feel that the great outdoors is really so "great", Derry offers many indoor activities as well, such as mini-mall shopping, cinemas, museums and even an opera house.  Derry, NH is a small town that always has something for you to do.  And if you can't find it in Derry, there are the nearby towns of Manchester, Nashua, Londonderry and Salem - you will find it there, regardless of what "it" may be.
