Origin: This town, as part of Massachusetts, went through the names Narragansett Number 4, Piscataquog Village, and Shovestown before installation of the New Hampshire provincial government. In 1748, the area was regranted to new settlers, including Colonel John Goffe, for whom the town was officially named. The town includes the village of Grasmere, named for the English home of poets Wordsworth and Coleridge.

Population Trends: Goffstown's population has grown well above the statewide average rate over each of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 16 percent increase between 1990-2000 to a 29 percent increase between 1980-1990. Over fifty years, Goffstown's population increased by a total of 11,291 residents, going from 5,638 in 1950 to 16,929 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Goffstown was 17,536 residents, which ranked 14th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2004: 472.2 persons per square mile of land area. Goffstown contains 37.1 square miles of land area and 0.5 square miles of inland water area.
