Hollis School System District Highlights

Hollis Primary School and Hollis Upper Elementary School have had a successful start to the 2005 - 2006 school year. This year we are proud to announce our new special education preschool H.I.P.P.- Hollis Integrated Preschool Program. H.I.P.P. is designed to be an inclusionary model providing instruction to both regular and special education students ages 3 and 4.

We continue to offer a strong academic program with an emphasis on differentiated instruction. This year, we have implemented Reader's and Writer's Workshops as well as a Word Study Program in grades 1-6. In partnership with the Center for Applied Child Development (CACD) at Tuft's University, our teachers are implementing these programs consistently and collaboratively district wide.

We are happy to report that our teachers will all meet the highly qualified teacher status under the No Child Left Behind Act by the 2006 deadline. This past year, district administrators customized training for all para-professionals to help them meet the 2006 highly qualified status deadline as well. This summer, the Primary School received a grant from the trustees of the Braitmayer Foundation for $27,500 to help implement the Responsive Classroom model school wide. A Responsive Classroom Instructor will continue to collaborate with the Primary School teachers to ensure best practices in Responsive Classroom techniques are met.

The Hollis students participate in a variety of academic tests each year . We use this information to help critique programs, make curriculum changes, identify areas of focus, and monitor areas that are successful. We continue to benchmark reading levels for each grade and use Reading Recovery methods to identify children in need of reading support. The NECAP for 3rd through 6th graders will help to provide the district with a tool to monitor our programs and meet the state's requirements for students. We look forward to using this assessment information to drive our instruction and help us make informed decisions on the next best learning steps for our students. Along with the new testing, the Hollis School District has worked to create a new report card system that will be implemented this year.

Students continue to participate in numerous opportunities to broaden their horizons, learn new skills, and have fun. Reading and Math Camps are offered during the summer. We continue to offer a Strings (violin, viola, cello) program as well as Band instruction to interested students at the Upper Elementary School.

We love to celebrate our cultural diversities and work closely with our PTA to provide many enriching activities. The success of our schools is directly tied to the strong home/school connection Hollis parents provide. Thanks to our community volunteers, we have once again earned the Blue Ribbon Achievement Award for our dedicated volunteers and the many hours they give to our district.
