Introduction to Litchfield, New Hampshire

Set on the east bank of the Merrimack River, the quiet farming community of Litchfield, New Hampshire offers acre upon acre of undeveloped land for its nearly 8500 residents.  Steeped in farming and small-town rural values, Litchfield has grown slowly until recent years due to its lack of immediate highway access.  The proposed Nashua-Hudson Circumferential Highway is likely to change that by providing quick and easy access to the Everett Turnpike and Route 3.  The increasing population of Litchfield only lends to the need for this new highway, but it is not without controversy and a start date for the project has yet to be determined

History of Litchfield

Initially known as Naticook (as the Native Americans called it), Litchfield was originally part of a 1656 land grant from Massachusetts that included Merrimack.  In 1729 a large area of this parcel of land was granted to William Benton and named Benton's Farm.  Upon Benton's death in 1749, the few remaining residents petitioned to form the town of Litchfield, so named for George Henry Lee, Earl of Litchfield.

Primarily known as a farming community, some of Litchfield's charms are the roadside fruit and vegetable stands and the "pick-your-own" farms that are scattered throughout the area.  These include Durocher Farm, McQuestern Farm, the state-certified organic Nesenkeag Co-op Farm, the Rodonis Farm and Wilson Farm.  Families from Litchfield and the surrounding towns revel in the availability of the fresh produce this small town provides.  In addition to rolling farmlands and wonderful produce, Litchfield is also home to the Edward Roy Memorial Park and the Passaconaway Country Club, a golf course which is open to the public.
