History of Mason

Originally referred to as "Number One" in a sequence of New Hampshire/Massachusetts border towns, the towns charter was granted in 1749. Needing to decide on a name, the townsfolk wanted to name the town "Sharon", but in 1768 Governor John Wentworth changed the name to Mason in honor of Captain John Mason, the man who held the original New Hampshire land grant given by King Charles the First.  One well-known resident of Mason, New Hampshire was Samuel Wilson, the man whose face is generally regarded to be the one that inspired the patriotic "Uncle Sam" character from the famous "I Want YOU" war posters.  His historic home still stands in Mason and has been lovingly restored.

With many streams, ponds and rivers in the area, fishing is very popular is Mason.  Hiking trails through thick forests lead to some of the finest scenic vistas south of the White Mountains.  With Nashua only 25 minutes away, Mason is close to commerce and industry but still distant enough to remain serene and undeveloped imparting upon Mason residents a feeling of seclusion and security while being close to city convenience.
