Origin: First known as Number 1, the first in a line of border towns including area allotted to this state by Massachusetts upon establishment of New Hampshire as a separate state in 1741. The town's charter was granted in 1749, and in 1768, Governor John Wentworth named it in honor of New Hampshire's founder, Captain John Mason. Captain Mason was the holder of patent with title to the land that became New Hampshire. Mason is the boyhood home of "Uncle Sam," Samuel Wilson.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 922 residents in 1790

Population Trends: Mason's population grew well above the statewide average over each decade but the most recent. Population decreased by five percent between 1990-2000; the highest increase was 53 percent which occurred between both 1970-1980 and 1980-1990. Population in Mason increased by a total of 859 residents, going from 288 in 1950 to 1,147 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Mason was 1,269 residents, which ranked 169th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2004: 52.9 persons per square mile of land area. Mason contains 24.0 square miles of land area and 0.01 square miles of inland water area.
