Introduction to New Ipswich, New Hampshire

With just over 5000 residents, the rural town of New Ipswich, New Hampshire clings to its quaint country atmosphere through its historic homes, winding back roads and limits on industrial growth.  Located in the southwest corner of Hillsborough County in southern New Hampshire, New Ipswich has much to offer the young family looking for a place to call home.  Far enough from urban sprawl, yet convenient to the modern amenities we've all come to depend on, New Ipswich is the classic example of New Hampshire living at its finest.

History of New Ipswich

First granted to several Ipswich, Massachusetts residents in 1735, the parcel of land was unnamed until the first real settlement in 1738.  Originally incorporated in 1762 as Ipswich, New Hampshire (in honor of the settler's origins), Governor Benning Wentworth renamed in the town New Ipswich to avoid any possible confusion between the this town and the Ipswich in Massachusetts.  With the Souhegan River in such close proximity, mills quickly sprung up along its banks including the state's first wool and cotton mills.  Glass, potash and linseed oil production soon followed, only to be outshined by early cabinetmakers whose furniture rapidly became known far and wide for its unerring quality.  Today the town's largest company, Warwick Mills, Inc., manufactures specialty fabrics found in countless applications from firefighting and police work to protective airbags used by NASA.
