Origin: Granted in 1735, this town was named by settlers from Ipswich, Massachusetts. New Hampshire's provincial government incorporated the town as Ipswich in 1762 and as New Ipswich in 1766. New Hampshire’s first cotton mill was built here in 1804, ancestor to the cotton-producing centers of Waltham and Lawrence, Massachusetts, and Manchester, New Hampshire.

Population Trends: Decennial population growth rates for New Ipswich were well above the statewide average rate with the exception of the last decade, ranging from a seven percent increase between 1990-2000 to a 65 percent increase between 1980-1990. Over fifty years, population in New Ipswich increased by a total of 3,142 residents, going from 1,147 in 1950 to 4,289 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for New Ipswich was 4,976 residents, which ranked 64th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2004: 152.0 persons per square mile of land area. New Ipswich contains 32.7 square miles of land area and 0.3 square miles of inland water area.
