Incorporated: 1768

Origin: Granted to soldiers from Rowley, Massachusetts, returning from the war in Canada, the town was known as Rowley-Canada. In 1749, the town was renamed Monadnock Number 1, or South Monadnock. It was incorporated as Rindge in 1768, in honor of Captain Daniel Rindge, one of the original grant holders. Rindge is the home of Franklin Pierce College, and the Cathedral of the Pines, a multi-denominational outdoor chapel.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 1,143 residents in 1790

Population Trends: Rindge's population increased very quickly over the last five decades, growing nearly eight times larger. Decennial growth rates ranged from a ten percent increase between 1990-2000 to a 131 percent increase between 1960-1970. Over fifty years, Rindge's population increased by a total of 4,744 residents, going from 707 in 1950 to 5,451 in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Rindge was 6,137 residents, which ranked 53rd among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2004: 165.6 persons per square mile of land area. Rindge contains 37.1 square miles of land area and 2.7 square miles of inland water area.
