Originally granted to soldiers from Salem, Massachusetts who fought a failed siege attempt of Quebec in 1690, Wilton was named Salem-Canada when it was first chartered in 1735 as a part of Massachusetts.  At the time, Salem-Canada was a part of Massachusetts' northern border and designed to repel attacks from local natives.  Regranted in 1749 as "Number 2" by Governor Benning Wentworth, the town was eventually incorporated in 1762 and named Wilton.  The origin of the town's name has been up for debate since the reason for naming it Wilton has been lost to the years.  Some believe it was named after Wilton, England, others believe it was named in honor of Sir Joseph Wilton, English sculptor and carriage designer for King George III.  Whatever the reason, Wilton has a proud heritage and a charm all its own.

Living twenty minutes from Manchester and only one hour from Boston gives Wilton residents all the convenience of city living with all the comforts of the country.  Downhill skiing, swimming, fishing and hiking are all within Wilton's town lines.  Folks who enjoy the great outdoors will revel in the Russell-Abbott State Forest (partially inside Wilton) and the Townsend State Forest just over the border in northern Massachusetts.  In addition to Wilton's municipal parks, there are several youth sport organizations in town offering basketball, soccer and baseball.  Wilton has its own cinema and all the mall shopping you could ever want is just thirty minutes away in nearby Manchester.

Wilton has something for just about everyone.  Russell-Abbott state forest is partially within the town lines, offering outdoor fun for those who wish to partake.  Andy's Summer Playhouse has been a destination for many children and teens of the town and its surrounding communities for over 35 years, enabling those ages 8 to 18 a place to use their creativity and develop their artistic abilities in the way of the theater.  For those who would rather "watch" than actually do the performing, the Wilton Town Hall Theatre screens films in the town hall's auditorium as well as in a former dressing room for the vaudeville shows that used to play the auditorium while passing through town.

Wilton, New Hampshire is a part of the Wilton-Lyndeboro School District, SAU #63 which consists of Wilton and, of course, Lyndeborough.  Wilton students of kindergarten age up to grade six attend the Florence Rideout Elementary School.  Wilton and Lyndeboro students in grades seven through twelve are enrolled in the Wilton-Lyndeboro Cooperative Middle/High School.

Also in town is a complete Waldorf School system, which consists of Pine Hill Elementary School and High Mowing School. High Mowing was established in 1940 and is a nationally known Waldorf High School.
