The town was first granted in 1749, and was regranted in 1762 as Wilton. It was probably named for Sir Joseph Wilton, a famous English sculptor. Wilton's coach design for King George III's coronation was later used as a model for the Concord Coach.

Over fifty years, Wilton's population increased by a total of 1,791 residents, going from 1,952 in 1950 to 3,743 residents in 2000.
